A family linked to psychiatry
Our links with mental health go back to the beginning of the last century, when, after his medical studies, Prof. Ramón Sarró Burbano (1900-1993) decided to dedicate his professional career to psychiatry After obtaining his degree in Barcelona, he spent several years in Vienna, under the supervision of Dr Helène Deutsch and Professor Sigmund Freud. On his return to Barcelona, he worked in different psychiatric centers and was a university professor. In 1950 he obtained the chair of Psychiatry at the University of Barcelona, a position he held until his retirement in 1971, during which time he also directed the Psychiatry Service of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
As a person of great intellectual restlessness and enormous erudition, he interacted with the main thinkers and psychiatrists from all over the world, maintaining an avant-garde and open stance towards the advances that took place in psychiatry during the second half of the 19th century, which he quickly incorporated into his practice. As an avid reader and great bibliophile, he collected more than one hundred thousand books, a library and personal documentation that he donated to the Biblioteca de Catalunya. In 1987 he was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
His son Artur Sarró Martín (1933-2008) joined the practice in 1956. Dialogic and friendly, throughout his more than 50 years as a psychiatrist, he was concerned with achieving the maximum wellbeing of his patients, towards whom he showed enormous proximity and empathy, caring about their discomfort and evolution, thus earning their appreciation and respect.
His cultural interests led him to cultivate different scientific and naturalistic hobbies from a very young age. As one of the first advocates of nature protection in our country, he actively participated in natural heritage preservation projects from different scientific and cultural entities. As a tireless traveler, he collected in photographs and filmed the stories of his journey around the world, and very singularly for the African continent, for which he felt a great passion. He enthusiastically shared all these hobbies with friends and interested parties at meetings and conferences throughout the country, activities for which he received distinctions and awards. After his death at the age of 74, the family donated all the material to the Filmoteca de Catalunya.
Dr. Artur Sarró lived through the appearance of the first psychotropic drugs for the treatment of mental illnesses in the 1960s and 1970s. Brought to our environment in haste by his father’s own enthusiasm, Dr. Artur Sarró knew how to incorporate these new tools to alleviate and treat the discomfort and suffering he saw in his patients. During this period Dr. Sarró distinguished himself for his skill and good judgment in the handling of the different drugs, knowing how to make a rational use of them and directly helping the thousands of patients he treated in his daily clinical practice during his more than 50 years of practice.
His son, Dr. Salvador Sarró Maluquer, Doctor of Medicine, inherited the family vocation and decided to specialize in psychiatry. He had the privilege to complement his training as a specialist with his father’s experience, who passed on to him the knowledge, principles, and values that have made the Sarró family a reference in psychiatric care.
During his more than 30 years of practice, he has combined his work in health care with research and teaching, constantly educating himself in the latest medical advancements to provide his patients with the most appropriate and effective care.
Dr. Sarró’s experience, vision and passion for psychiatry encouraged him to create an institute to give continuity to a consolidated and proven care model. This model is based on scientific evidence and personalized treatment. It is committed to individualized and quality care, adapted to the reality and complexity inherent to each patient, in order to achieve the best possible therapeutic treatment.
To this end, Dr. Sarró has surrounded himself with the best specialists both in the fields of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Psychology. Professionals with proven experience and trajectory have joined the project, sharing Dr. Sarró’s pragmatic vision and scientific and human approach. Meanwhile, and as a guarantee for the future, new professionals are joining the team to consolidate and perpetuate the psychiatric and psychological assistance model of the Institute.
